This home provides both living and working space for a couple whose children recently left home, allowing them to relocate from the city to the mountains. Set on a large, forested, and very private site, the home has spectacular views of the San Juan mountains. The owners were well-experienced in design and construction, and wanted to be involved in all aspects of the design/build process. Our process was deeply collaborative, and resulted in a home that maximized the owners’ priorities, at a lower cost than purchasing (and remodeling) an existing home.
The open-plan kitchen and living space has high vaulted ceilings and expansive glass to the mountain view, shaded by large aluminum fins on the exterior. Flanking the central space are the guest wing to the West, and home office, garage and utility spaces to the East. A master suite and small study are on the upper level, where a large concrete deck and frameless glass railings allow unobstructed views.
To reduce both long-term maintenance wildfire risk, the exterior of the home is clad in stone, metal, and cement-board siding. Exterior columns and beams are structural steel. The home is contemporary in style, which was a departure from the owners’ previous homes, yet the dark exterior colors and textures help “blend” the home visually with the site. White interiors provide a peaceful, quiet foil for the dramatic outward views.
